News & Events >> 2008 University of South Carolina Honors Academic Cooperation with Taiwan Government Offices March 25, 2008 Director General R.C. Wu accepted an Award of Excellence for Institutional Support from the Dean of University of South Carolina's College of Arts and Sciences, Mary Anne Fitzpatrick at a Recognition of Excellence Dinner on March 14, 2008. The TECRO office in Washington DC and the TECO office in Atlanta were jointly awarded for their long collaboration with USC, especially with its Richard L. Walker Institute of International and Area Studies' Taiwan programs. With the support of TECRO/TECO, USC hosts annual academic symposiums and activities related to Taiwan issues, which attract leading scholars from around the world. TECRO and TECO-ATL have supported the international studies, political science, and other related graduate degree studies of more than fifty USC students who focus on Taiwanese-American relations. Director General R.C. Wu addressed the guests at USC on behalf of TECRO Representative Dr. Jaushieh (Joseph) Wu and the TECRO Cultural Division. He voiced his gratitude to Dr. Fitzpatrick for the honor and expressed pride and pleasure in the fruitful relations between USC and Taiwan, especially the link and exchange between USC and the Taichung Medical University. Mr. Wu also highlighted Taiwan's economic presence in South Carolina, noting the $1billion investment from South Carolina's Taiwanese-owned company, Nan Ya Plastics Corp. USA. Director General Wu concluded by stating his confidence in Taiwan as a working model for all Chinese people to progress toward democracy and human rights and his hope that Taiwan's exposure in the international community will further strengthen such a positive influence. Five outstanding USC alumni and staff were also honored for their contributions to the University at the ceremony on March 14th. Dr. Golden Smith Director of Richard L. Walker Institute of International Area Studies and Dr. Marc Moskowitz, who is specifically responsible for Taiwan programs at USC, attended the dinner. Miss Erica Lee, Consular Officer and head of South Carolina Affairs at TECO in Atlanta, accompanied Mr. Wu from TECO in Atlanta.
