TECO Invited to Join Atlanta’s First Official Earth Day Celebration

Mayor Shirley Franklin presided over Atlanta’s first official Earth Day ceremony held in Grant Park on April 10, 2007. TECO in Atlanta was invited to join the event and Director General R.C. Wu was invited speak on behalf of Taiwan.

Mr. Wu told the moving story of Taiwan’s efforts to preserve the migration paths of its beloved butterflies, even in the midst of booming growth. Taiwan ecologists calculated that each year thousands of butterflies die as they attempt their migration route, which intersects with Taiwan’s busy highways. In response, the Taiwanese officials have spent tens of thousands of dollars to erect protective nets that force the butterflies to fly higher and ultra violet lighting in an attempt to attract the butterflies to fly in safe zones. A far lane of traffic is even closed as an extra precaution. The festival-goers were impressed by Taiwan’s sensitivity to harmonious co-existence.

Eve Hao’s Dance School provided entertainment for the event. TECO in Atlanta also provided Taiwanese finger foods.

結合僑社參與亞特蘭大地球日活動

為了喚起大亞特蘭大地區民眾對環保議題的重視，亞特蘭大市政府日前在格蘭特(Grant)公園舉行2007年亞特蘭大地球日活動(2007 Atlanta Earth Day Celebration)，活動由市長富蘭克林(Shirley Franklin)主持，現場共有廿餘環保社團設攤展覽，提供參觀民眾各項環保議題的有關資訊，以及品嚐喬州當地所出產的有機食物，活動吸引近千民眾參與。本處及亞城王廣敏舞蹈社應邀提供包括羽扇舞及台灣原住民舞蹈等多項表演曲目，在王老師所指導的十多位小舞者們的優美舞姿以及舞曲旋律的帶動下，會場氣氛也跟著熱鬧起來，主辦單位同時邀請了駐亞特蘭大台北經濟文化辦事處吳榮泉處長代表亞城台僑社區出席並上台致詞，吳處長除了說明台灣獨特的地理環境和自然條件外，並且以台灣政府日前封鎖高速公路外側車道、架設防護網以及用紫光燈引導紫斑蝶遷移的作法，凸顯了台灣政府在長期以來強調經濟發展的同時，也重視環境保護措施的均衡施政，獲得現場觀眾熱烈鼓掌。
