Atlanta Taiwanese Community Run for Taiwan¡¦s Bid to Join WHO

May 6, 2006

For the purpose of manifesting the appeal of Taiwan¡¦s bid to join the World Health Organization (WHO), TECO, together with over 600 hundred joggers, including about 60 local Taiwanese, participated in the 5K jogging organized by the Big Peachtree Running Company on May 6th.

The runners arrived at MARTA Brookhaven Station on the crisp Saturday morning. While runners were warming up for the 5K challenge, the drum beats of the Atlanta Taiwanese School drummers boosted the morale of all. Participants sprinted through the starting line after the starting signal sounded, the most notable among them wearing the t-shirt designed by TECO with wording in support of Taiwan¡¦s bid to join the WHO. 200 Taiwan shirts were taken and worn by the runners.

Runners began to appear at the finish line after some twenty minutes. Mr. David Yu, CEO of the National Summit Bank and Attorney Stephen Chen were among the first few to finish the run from the overseas Taiwanese community. Margaret Yeh won the champion title in the 14-year-old group. Former president of the Atlanta Taiwanese Association, Mrs. Fu-Mei Huang came in third in the senior group.

In addition to participating in the run, Atlanta Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce, under the leadership of President Jack Kuo, also set up a booth to display the information introducing Taiwan and its appeal to join the international community. The Tai-Chi Association of Atlanta performed and helped the runners to achieve the peace of mind after the competitive race.

During the award ceremony, TECO provided delicate traditional Taiwanese handicrafts for the winners and Director General Wu handed a donation check of 1,000 dollars for the prevention and treatment research of stroke and leukemia to the health organizations affiliated with the race.

With the active participation of the Taiwanese community and the American support of Taiwan at the Big Peach 5K, the appeal of the 23 million Taiwan people for the international society to respect their right to take part in international organizations was well presented.
