Taiwan Youth Baseball Team Visits Atlanta

October 26, 2006

The Taiwan National Youth Baseball Team, en route to Cuba for the 22nd World Junior Championship Game, visited Atlanta from September 6th to September 14th. During their stay in Atlanta, the Taiwan team had several exhibition games with both the Georgia and the U.S. National Team.

This was the first time the Taiwan National Youth Team held exhibition games for training purposes before they participated in official games. The Taiwanese community in Atlanta, together with the staff of TECO in Atlanta, not only grouped up to attend each game and cheer for their home team, but they also provided the food for the boys. The local Taiwanese community also hosted a farewell party before the team’s departure for Cuba on September 13.

Baseball is a major sport in Taiwan. In the 1960s and 1970s, Taiwan teams were top competitors for the minor, junior and senior titles of the world championships. During game season, because of the time difference, millions of Taiwanese stayed up all night in front of TV sets to watch the young players competing for the world championships in the U.S. A Taiwan team victory always led to a homecoming parade and a pervading sense of national pride. That old joy and excitement has remained in the memories of middle-aged people in Taiwan.

Nowadays the baseball frenzy is mostly focused on the outstanding performance of Taiwanese players in the Major League, like Chien Ming Wang, the Yankee pitcher who acquired 19 wins in this season.
