“Place/ Displace: Three Generations of Taiwanese Art” Exhibit
at Columbus State University

August 23, 2005

Among the admirers of the comprehensive art exhibit from Taiwan, which opened on August 23, 2005 at Columbus State University (Columbus, GA) were Mayor of Columbus, Mr. Bob Poydasheff, President of the Columbus State University, Mr. Frank Brown, and Director General R.C. Wu and Director Lincoln Ting of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta.

Mr. Wu presided over the reception in honor of the Taiwanese artists. He stressed the historical span, from the Chinese colonization and Japanese rule to the aboriginal people of Taiwan, Dutch and Portuguese colonization, which gave the island its apt title of Illa Formosa, or Beautiful Island. Mr. Wu also directed the audience to consider how the perspectives represented in the exhibit are manifestations of Taiwan’s social and political evolution. He stated that the art in "Place/Displace," crafted by three generations of Taiwanese, portrays a modern history from an artist’s point of view.

Columbus State University’s President Brown visited Taiwan to view this exhibit and was convinced that its opening at his university would promote international awareness and cultural exchange among the students and members of the surrounding community.

The "Place/Displace" exhibit, also opening in Kentucky and Chicago (USA), was sponsored by the Cultural Committee of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
