Director-General gives speech at United Nations Association in North Carolina

On November 14, 2005 Director General R.C. Wu was invited by President Ed Klemmer, of the United Nations Association-Wake County North Carolina chapter, to speak their monthly meeting. Mr. Wu traveled to Meredith College in North Carolina, to address over eighty members of the UNA chapter and students from the Department of Politics from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who were led my Dr. Daniel Figgins, Chair of the department.

Mr. Wu’s speech was titled, “Taiwan and its Relations with China”, covering a brief history of the Republic of China and Taiwan, the recent political and economic developments in Taiwan, including the shift of governing parties in the 2000 elections, Taiwan’s growing international status and the oppression and marginalization coming from China. He also covered some specific figures on trade and investment between Taiwan and China, highlighting this crucial aspect of the two countries’ relations.

The audience responded with over thirty minutes of questions, which Mr. Wu and members of the Taiwanese community, including John Wei and Huei Ying Juang, jointly responded to. Mr. Hseuh Yu Chou, Section Chief in Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and alumni of Duke University, also attended the speech.
