Director-General R.C. Wu spoke on ¡§Political and Economic Developments
in Taiwan: the Republic of China and Cross-strait Relations¡¨ to the
Young Professionals of the Southern Center for International Studies
Jan. 23.
Director-General Wu began by offering an historical overview of Taiwan, focusing on the political, cultural and economic advances the country has made in recent years. He then discussed a number of current issues, including cross-strait relations and the March 20 referendum. He made special note of Taiwan's status in the international community. He pointed out that while the Palestinian Liberation Organization has observer status at the United Nations (UN), Taiwan has no status with the UN. And, while the Dali Lama is welcomed to the White House, President Chen Shui-bian's brief stopover in the United States drew fierce protest from the People's Republic of China. The director general noted that the recent severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak is one reason that Taiwan should have membership in international organizations. It is inhumane for the World Health Organization to refuse to assist Taiwan because of Beijing's objections, he said. |
