 Director-General Wu Visits Newberry College

July 2, 2004

Director General R. C. Wu, accompanied by Senior Consular Office Bill Huang, visited Newberry College in South Carolina on July 1, 2004. Mr. Wu was greeted by President Mitchell Zais and all the Vice Presidents of Newberry College. Mr. Mark Hammond, South Carolina Secretary of State, also attended the meeting as an alumnus.

During the meeting, Mr. Wu discussed with President Zais on a wide range of issues concerning scholastic exchanges between Newberry and Taiwan. Dr. Zais emphasized the academic achievements and student security at Newberry College and expressed his wish to attract more students from Taiwan to the college. Mr. Wu said that the ROC government has put much emphasis on encouraging students to come to the U.S.A. for further studies and that he believed Newberry College had a lot to offer in the joint-effort to boost scholastic exchange and cooperation between Taiwan and the United States.

Secretary Hammond attended the Inaugural Ceremony of President Chen Shui-bian during his recent trip to Taiwan in May. He also made a visit to the Ministry of Education during his trip and was impressed by the ROC government¡¦s efforts in higher education. Upon his return to the U.S., Secretary Hammond invited Director General Wu to visit Newberry College in hopes of placing his Alma Mater on the map of appealing study-abroad destinations for Taiwanese students.
