Memphis University honors Taiwan's achievements

April 15, 2004

On April 14, 2004, Memphis University in Tennessee held a reception featuring Taiwan's remarkable economic and democratic achievements. Director-General Rong-Chuan Wu of TECO-Atlanta, accompanied by Senior Consular Officer Bill Huang, attended the reception as the guest of honor.

Mr. Wu also addressed the faculty of the Political Science Department as well as members of Phi Beta Delta (International Student Honor Society) and Pi Sigma Alpha (National Political Science Honor Society) on the economic and political developments of Taiwan. He emphasized that open and fair elections over the years demonstrate the deep-rooted democracy in Taiwan. As for the disputes after the Presidential election, Mr. Wu said this occurrence is the norm of any democratic process marked by tight election results, and it will be solved by due process of law. The belief in democracy and the respect for rule of law as demonstrated recently by the people in Taiwan is a shining example of how a true civil society is possible in East Asia, Mr. Wu said.
