Representative Chen speaks at the Columbia World Affairs Council

At the invitation of Columbia World Affairs Council, Representative C. J. Chen of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S. delivered a speech on December 2, 2003 in South Carolina. Ambassador Chen touched upon the economic development and democratization of the Republic of China on Taiwan, its relations with Mainland China and the friendly and mutually-beneficial relations between Taiwan and the United States.

Ambassador Chen stressed on the values and interests shared by Taiwan and the United States. He also addressed the recent passage of the Referendum Law in the Legislative Yuan. Ambassador Chen explained that passage of the law was part of the natural course of Taiwan's democratization. The R.O.C. government is fully aware of the complexity and sensitivity the Referendum Law in the context Taiwan's relations with Mainland China, he said, and he assured his audience that the country will stick to President Chen Shui-bian's promise not to declare independence, provided there is no military provocation from Mainland China.

Attendees of the speech include Lt. Governor André Bauer of South Carolina, SC Agriculture Commissioner Charles Sharpe, Director Richard Coate of The Richard L. Walker Institute of International Studies of the University of South Carolina (USC), Director John Hsieh of the Asian Study Institute of USC, President of Columbia WAC Fred Monk and Director-General Rong Chuan Wu of TECO-Atlanta.
