The
Global Alliance for Democracy and Peace, Atlanta Chapter petitioned
in protest against China's Anti-Separation Law in Atlanta Piedmont
Park on March 26, 2005. The protest slogans included the following:
"Taiwan = Democracy, Freedom and Peace ; China = Missiles,
Communism, and Oppression" , Taiwan Ú China," and
"Support Taiwan, Oppose China's Anti-Separation Law."
The activities draw the attention of the passer-bys and won
their support.
Mr.
Chen, Chairman of the Chapter, commented that, after Taiwan's
controversial presidential election last year, the outlook on
cross-straits relations seemed bright especially with direct
charter flight services set to begin this year. However, China
People's Assembly recently passed the so-called "Anti-Separation
Law" on March 14, 2005, denying Taiwan's sovereignty and
altering unilaterally the "status quo" across the
Taiwan Strait. The law has further aggregated regional tension.
Mr. Chen hopes that the international community will treat this
issue seriously and urge China to conduct peaceful negotiations,
free from coercion with military threats, with Taiwan. |
